total mombie: what i'm trying to help get better sleep

Sleep?!  What even is that?!

It seems like it has been so long since I felt rested.  Granted, I have never had an easy time falling asleep or staying asleep, but in a previous life, I could at least function on the amount of sleep I was getting.  These days, I feel like I’m living The Walking Dead — a total zombie!  Correction: a total MOMbie!

The pandemic and all that has accompanied it (restrictions, precautions, working from home, no childcare, remote learning, and more) have added additional stress to and have induced more anxiety in my life which, in turn, have caused more issues with my ability to get quality sleep.  I know I’m not the only person that has been affected this way, but it is no less frustrating!

I have been pretty desperate in recent months to find a solution to my sleeping woes.  Let me share a bit of what I’ve been trying!

less screentime before bed

I don’t even want to think about how much of my day is spent in front of a screen, whether it be my computer for work and blogging, my phone for social media, or the TV.  While laying in bed, I used to regularly do the whole endless/mindless scrolling thing, which I know is not great.

What I’m trying:  To start, I now use the built-in blue light filter on my phone.  At least 30 minutes before bed, I am trying to get in the habit of PUTTING MY PHONE DOWN!  Admittedly, I have to be more consistent with this, but I am slowly getting into this habit.

Like any human, I have a lot of feelings.  I tend to stew in them at nighttime, along with my thoughts.  I just can’t shut my mind off!

What I’m trying: I have read suggestions of keeping a notepad or journal next to the bed so you can write down what’s on your mind when you’re trying to sleep.  The idea is that once you write it down, it should be less of a worry.  I put a small notebook and pen on my nightstand where I can get out my thoughts or write that totally random thing down so I don’t forget it, etc.  So far, it’s been a place for me to rant and get all of my anxious or angry thoughts spurred by this pandemic onto paper.  I think this is something that, over time, could be good for me.

Is it me or is finding the perfect pillow like looking for the lost city of Atlantis?? I can’t even tell you how many different brands or styles of pillows I have tried over the years.  UGH the money I’ve spent on new pillows that I end up hating *cringe*

What I’m trying:  I took to my Instagram stories a few months back asking for pillow recommendations, and a friend replied with a great priced option from Amazon — the Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow.  These pillows have a 4.5 star rating and over 40k reviews on Amazon!  Bought them, love them!  Still not perfect (I wake a lot with some neck pain), but it has helped!

Essential Oil Diffuser

I know so many live and die by essential oils.  I have heard plenty about the various benefits, but have not gotten into them.  I decided that I wanted to see if diffusing lavender may help, though, with relaxation and sleep.

What I’m trying:  I asked one of my best friend’s for her diffuser recommendations, and decided to get this one from Amazon after she told me that she likes it as much as her more expensive ones and it comes with a better price tag — the VicTsing 500ml Essential Oil Diffuser with Oils.  I am up in the air as to whether I think this has been helpful or not.  I can’t say that I have noticed any major effects of diffusing essential oils for sleep.  The biggest downfall with the diffuser is the sound and light it gives off.  My sleep is so sensitive that hearing it run and seeing the subtle light might be doing more harm for my sleep than the essential oils are doing good.  I am going to keep with it to see if I notice any benefits over a longer period of time.

Weighted Blanket

My husband is well acquainted with my sleep issues and has made his share of suggestions over the years.  He uses a weighted blanket and has asked me to try his a few times to help with the anxiety I experience at nighttime.

What I’m trying:  Using the guide for the product on what weight would be appropriate for me, I ordered  this 12lb. blanket — the ZonLi Weighted Blanket.  This is a very comfortable weighted blanket!  The problem with trying to use my husband’s was the weight; it was too much for me which made it uncomfortable.  I don’t know that this purchase has had an astronomical effect on my sleep, but I like it enough to keep using it.

I’m still not having tons of luck in my quest for a good night’s sleep.  Some things have been helpful while other things are more of a miss.  Regardless, I am working towards creating healthier habits and a consistent bedtime routine in hopes that my sleep improves.  Especially for my kids so I can be a better mom, I need sleep! contains some affiliate links.  If you buy something using the retail links on this site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. for more information, please read more on our Disclosure Policy page.
