Skincare Products I'm Loving at 35

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt uncomfortable in your own skin…

If you raised your hand, just know that you are far from alone!

My skin has been a source of frustration and a cause of major insecurity since puberty.  Breakouts, dark circles, and discoloration are just some of the issues I’ve battled over the years to no avail.  Despite knowing better, I haven’t always spent the proper time and money to take care of my skin.  I remember waking up with regrets of sleeping in my makeup more times than I can count, especially in college; not my finest moments!

It wasn’t until this past year — in my mid-thirties — that I really began to invest in products that would benefit my skin.  I turned to bloggers and beauty gurus to see what products they recommend that wouldn’t completely break the bank. Moreso now that I have kids, I have a difficult time justifying spending money on myself.  Can you relate?  I decided to compromise with myself and pace the introduction of skincare products into my routine, “splurging” on a few, not all (*note: I purchase all but one of the products from Amazon and have included affiliate links below).

Here are some of the products that have won me over:

kiehl's midnight recovery concentrate

Hands down my favorite skincare product — Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate!  This serum restores, replenishes, and regenerates the skin as you sleep.  I remember the first few days I used it, I raved to my husband about how much of a difference I could see in such a short amount of time!  I use about 5 drops of this serum every night on clean skin, before my moisturizer.  Love it!  Highly recommend!

Tatcha the dewy skin cream

I have combination dry skin, and when I was searching for a moisturizing skin cream with some anti-aging properties, The Dewy Skin Cream from Tatcha kept popping up!  This is one of my splurges with a pricetag over $70, but it’s worth it.  It’s a really rich cream that packs a punch with hydration and antioxidants.  I’ve been using this one for 6+ months and can’t see myself going back now.  Initially I was using this cream twice a day (a.m. and p.m.), but I have been trying another cream at night for the last month or so and have switched to only using The Dewy Skin Cream in the mornings following my eye cream and serums on clean skin.

rodan & fields active hydration bright eye complex

This is a much more recent addition to my skincare routine — Rodan & Fields Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex.  The COVID-19 chaos of working from home while trying to wrangle a 1 and 2 year old while also helping my 9-year old with distance learning, plus sleeping less and stressing more caused me to finally invest in a non-drugstore eye cream.  I’ve always had dark circles and puffiness, but it’s been so much worse recently.  A childhood friend who is a consultant for R&F reached out over Instagram DMs and sent some samples.  I was instantly sold!  Another splurge coming in over $70, it’s worth every penny!  I use a teeny tiny amount (about the size or smaller than a grain of rice) both morning and night, applied just after cleaning my skin — a little goes a long way.

mad hippie vitamin c serum

The Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum was one of the first serums I tried!  I read plenty about how great a Vitamin C serum was for brightening the skin and this one in particular came recommended by a favorite blogger.  With a decent price, this was a no-brainer.  This is also good for evening skin tone and texture, which I need thanks to too much time in the sun in my youth and those pesky breakouts I’m still battling.  I use about 1/2 of the dropper in the a.m. only on clean skin, before my moisturizer.

drunk elephant a-passioni retinol cream

I remember talking skincare on a friend’s bachelorette weekend, and the one thing that consistently came up was retinol since “we’re not getting any younger.”  When I got home, I did some Googling and hit up my go-to blogs and decided to try A-Passioni Retinol Cream from Drunk Elephant; another splurge for me costing over $70.  The retinol is paired with Vitamin F, which is the perfect balance to help improve tone/texture without major sensitivity.  I did ease this into my nighttime regimen, as the product directs.  I used it once a week at first then increased it to twice a week, then every other day.  I choose not to use it every day at this point, but that is a personal choice.  On nights I use this retinol cream, I apply a pea size amount all over my clean face after my eye cream and serums, followed by a moisturizer.

My skin is not, by any means, perfect now, but I feel like I’ve been taking steps in the right direction with the help of these products. Spending the extra energy on myself has not only been good for my skin but also for my mental health.  This is a great form of self-care that I can easily indulge in daily.  It may have taken me till the age of 35 to begin taking my skincare more seriously, but I’m on board now!
