BOOK REVIEW: CONSTANT (THE CONFIDENCE GAME #1)
BY RACHEL HIGGINSON
For my third post of #Blogmas (I warned you I was playing by my own rules — it’s 12/12/17 and only my third Blogmas post) I bring to you a book review of a steamy New Adult second chance romantic suspense that I COULD. NOT. PUT. DOWN. — Constant by Rachel Higginson!
This book is not new to my blog, as I have previously featured an excerpt and a #WaitingOnWednesday post. I am also looking forward to featuring its sequel Consequence in the very near future, as Rachel plans to reveals the cover for the second book soon. For now, though, here is my review of Constant:
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Title: Constant (The Confidence Game #1)
Author: Rachel Higginson
Genre: New Adult, Second Chance Romantic Suspense
Publishing: November 16th 2017 (Reckless Siren Publishing)

“He was the one constant in my life that had pushed me through the darkness. He was the one constant in my life that loved me beyond everything else, beyond what I was or had been or could ever be. He wanted me to be better. He wanted to be better for me…
But he was my constant then and he is the constant ghost that haunts me now.”
Fifteen years ago I met Sayer Wesley. I fell in love with him. I promised I would never leave him. I swore nothing could break us apart.
Five years ago I broke my promise. I ran away. I took the one secret that could destroy us both and disappeared.
Five days ago I thought I saw him.
I knew it was impossible. Sayer was locked away, serving a deserved sentence in federal prison. He couldn’t find me.
He wouldn’t find me. I was too good at hiding. Too good at surviving.
Because if Sayer ever found me, there would be hell to pay for a plethora of sins. The worst of which, he didn’t even know about.
Five hours ago, I told myself I was crazy.
Five minutes ago, I saw him again.
Five seconds ago, I was too late.
Let me start of by saying that if you haven’t yet read a Rachel Higginson book, you’re missing out! She has a book for most types of readers, and I recommend that you pick one up, whether it’s this book or another.
Rachel is the best-selling author of The Opposite of You, The Five Stages of Falling in Love, Every Wrong Reason, Bet on Us and The Star-Crossed Series. I love Rachel’s writing, and I was extremely excited when asked to review an ARC of Constant.
I love when a synopsis really grabs my attention, and, I mean, did you read the summary of Constant!?! You could just tell that the plot was going to be full of suspense, and it absolutely did not disappoint for me.
Constant shares the story of Caroline. Caroline’s life was not perfect, and she was forced to live a certain way when she was younger thanks to her father’s choices. Fast forward, and Caroline lives a much different, more simple life with her daughter and best friend. As the story progresses, more pieces of the puzzle connect to form a clearer picture and gives the reader a better understanding of what happened over the years in Caroline’s life to make her lifestyle go from one extreme to another with her living in fear.
I loved the way the story was set up — jumping between past and present until everything fell into place and aligned.
The plot itself was intense and full of anticipation. I needed to keep reading to find out the next bit of the story. Constant deals with the criminal underground in Washington D.C., and, although I have precisely zero knowledge on the subject, I felt like it was portrayed pretty well.
I will now also vaguely mention that it gets a little steamy, and based on the ending, I assume we might get more of that in book 2 — no arguments from me on that if it does!
For the most part, I liked Caroline’s character. She is strong and knows what she needs to do. She knows what she has to do to keep the most important aspects of her life safe. Her counterpart, Sayer, grew on me as the book progressed (but I think that is the point). I can’t wait to get more of them both in Consequence.
Now, it is a good thing book 2 releases soon because THAT ENDING!!! I am still trying to recover from the massive cliffhanger!
Overall, I would definitely recommend Constant! Rachel is an Indie author, and she deserves lots of love and support. Fans of second chance romance with a major spin will enjoy this book. Be on the lookout for some more info about the sequel, Consequence (which drops in February 2018), coming soon!
Until next time…xo
